Rabbits of Okunoshima

Rabbits of Okunoshima explores the uneasy contrast between the island’s playful, free-roaming rabbits and its hidden history as a secret chemical weapons site from 1929 to 1945. While tourists are drawn to its charm, abandoned military structures remain as haunting reminders of its past. Inspired by this juxtaposition, I created ceramic rabbits wearing gas masks—symbols of innocence overshadowed by human darknes. Crafted using slip casting, press moulding, and hand-building, each figure is unique, inviting reflection on the island’s layered history and the fragility of perception.
